Coady Filliter to merge with Patterson Law

Effective April 1, 2016, Coady Filliter will merge with Patterson Law, making a new home at Patterson Law’s Halifax office.

Clients of both firms will benefit from the merger, with access to a wider set of specialists.

“This merger sharpens the tools we can offer our clients, particularly with regards to corporate-commercial and family law,” said George White, managing partner at Patterson Law.

Coady Filliter partner Paul Radford, Q.C. brings his business law and insolvency practice to the Patterson Law team. Radford is also chair of the Nova Scotia Securities Commission.

Partner Daniel Walker and Janice Beaton, Q.C., bring to Patterson Law their years of practice focussed primarily on family law.  Walker is past chair of the Canadian Bar Association Nova Scotia branch Family Law Section.  Beaton is past chair of the Barristers’ Society’s Supreme Court (Family) Liaison committee.

Other Coady Filliter lawyers joining Patterson Law will be Kevin C. MacDonald and Jonathan Hooper, who will join Patterson’s litigation group.  Joyce Diamond will be joining Patterson Law’s corporate/commercial group.  Former partner, Jim Filliter, has retired from practice.

According to Radford, Coady Filliter clients will benefit from this merger as well. “Merging with Patterson Law adds depth to our practice areas and gives our clients access to a really strong tax group. Patterson Law’s team of associates and clerks will be another advantage for our clients.”

“Patterson Law has a solid group of lawyers and staff who have managed to keep the client as their first priority, even as the model of law practice in Canada changes,” said Walker. “We’re looking forward to being a part of that.”

According to White, “When you look for new talent, you ideally look for those who share your views and values. Coady Filliter has built its business on the same values with which we built ours – strong personal character, common sense advice and caring about the clients you serve.”

This merger is the latest in a number of significant additions to the Patterson Law team. David F. Curtis, Q.C. joined Patterson Law as partner in January of this year. In 2015 partner Karen J. Killawee joined the firm. Patterson Law merged with Goodman MacDonald in 2014, adding a New Glasgow office to its operations.  Patterson Law also added Ellen Burke to its New Glasgow office, Daniel Boyle to its Truro office and Alanna Mayne and Lesley Sawers to its Halifax office in 2015.  As a result, Patterson Law will have 37 lawyers and more than 70 staff across its three locations.

Patterson Law is a Nova Scotia firm with offices in Halifax, Truro and New Glasgow.  Patterson Law offers a broad range of specialized legal resources providing solutions to individuals, companies and organizations in Nova Scotia and beyond.
