Published June 30, 2025

Effective June 30th, 2025, Patterson Law announces the retirement of J. Gregory MacDonald, K.C., marking the close of a truly remarkable legal career.
Greg joined Patterson Law in 2014 when he and longtime colleague Rick Goodman, K.C., brought their New Glasgow-based firm, Goodman MacDonald, under the Patterson Law banner. A distinguished member of the Nova Scotia Bar since 1975, Greg’s career has spanned five decades. In May 2025, he was formally recognized with his 50-year practice certificate—a rare milestone that speaks to a lifetime of dedication, excellence, and service.
Greg’s roots with the firm trace back even further to his days at Dalhousie Law School, where he forged enduring friendships with future Patterson Law colleagues Ron Creighton, K.C. (deceased), Rick Goodman, K.C., and George White, K.C. Those early connections laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and legal integrity.
Throughout his career, Greg has been admired not only for his legal insight but also for his kindness, humility, and support of those around him. A trusted mentor to many within the firm, Greg’s thoughtful guidance and leadership have left a lasting mark on generations of Patterson Law lawyers.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Greg is also widely known for his musical talents as a longtime member of the beloved Pictou County band Déjà Vu, and for his deep community ties throughout the region. Whether in the courtroom, on stage, or in the community, Greg has brought warmth, joy, and generosity to all he does.
Greg, we are profoundly grateful for the decades you’ve dedicated to this profession, to your colleagues, and to your community. Your legacy will continue at Patterson Law through the many lives you’ve touched. We wish you the very best in your well-earned retirement.
