In Memory of Hon. Lorne Clarke

Former Chief Justice Lorne O Clarke passed away on Saturday, May 21. He was a former Partner of this law firm.

Following his graduation from Dalhousie and Harvard, Lorne Clarke became a fulltime faculty member of Dalhousie Law School teaching company law. He was enticed to join Patterson Smith Matthews & Grant to become a Partner to assume responsibility for the developing practice of corporate/commercial law in its office in Truro. While with our firm he also became the highest profile arbitrator and mediator in Nova Scotia resolving many labour and commercial disputes. Mr. Clarke was often called upon by both the Federal and Provincial governments to settle major disruptions in the public sector.

Lorne Clarke was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1981 and a few years later was elevated to the position of Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, where he served with distinction. Following his retirement from that position the former Chief Justice was frequently called upon by governments for special inquires and commissions.

Lorne Clarke was a man of impeccable integrity, the highest of ethical standards, unlimited wisdom and a big dose of common sense. Tireless in his efforts, he always had time for everyone. A conference room in Truro carries his name in recognition of his contribution to the journey of this firm and the public.

Visitation will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive on Wednesday, May 25 at 2PM to 4PM and again from 7PM to 9PM. A funeral service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Saint David, 1537 Brunswick Street, Halifax on Thursday, May 26 at 2PM, with a reception to follow immediately at St. Matthew’s United Church Hall, Barrington Street.
